The IPW Memorial and Lower Nike Parks were once the site of a U. S. Army Air Defense Command (ARADCOM) Nike Hercules and Nike Ajax missile installation (Site PH-99) which played a major role in the defense of the Philadelphia area during the Cold War. From 1954 until 1964, several Regular Army units occupied this site. Between 1964 and 1969, these same facilities were operated by units of the Pennsylvania National Guard. Fire control, including radar and administration, occupied this area; missile magazines (launchers) were located in the present Lower Nike Park. This marker is dedicated to the memory of those who dedicated their efforts to the defense of our country during those uncertain times. Dedicated on Memorial Day . the 29th of May, 2000 |
